Tips for easier break-in
As you can imagine, our staff at the European office have broken in a pair or two of Red Wing boots over the years. We know the process (and sometimes the struggle 😉), — and we thought we`d share a few tips with you. Obviously, none of these are mandatory but they can help to make the break-in period more pleasant and shorter.
Here's our list of go-to tips:
1. Start Slow
Don't go straight into all-day wear. Begin by wearing your boots indoors for a few hours at a time — around the house, to the office, a short walk.
Then, gradually build up. The leather needs time to soften and mold to your feet, and your feet need time to adjust to the boots. A little patience now means years of perfect comfort later.
2. Wear the Right Socks
This is probably our most underrated tip. Padded socks dramatically reduce friction and cushion your feet while the leather is still breaking in. They don't have to be Red Wing socks — but since you asked, two of our team favorites:
If you like cotton socks:
Cushion Crew Sock — Maximum padding and all-day comfort. Perfect if you want that extra cushion underfoot.
If you like wool socks:
Full Crew Sock — Natural warmth, breathability, moisture control and best-in-class padding for extra comfort. Our wool wearers swear by these.
3. Give Your Boots a Break
This is less for comfort but more the first step in taking good care of your Red Wings. After a few days of consecutive wear, give them at least a full day off. Leather needs time to breathe and dry out completely — this extends the life of the boot and keeps them feeling fresh.
That`s it. Now go and enjoy your new boots, and may they last for a very, very long time.
